1.  When should I see a psychologist?

    Some of the most common issues that people come in for counseling include depression, anxiety, conflict resolution, stress management. People also visit me for:

  • Overcoming childhood trauma

  • Developing healthier eating strategies and improving body image

  • Finding support and counsel so as to move forward with their lives and not let past experiences overwhelm them.

  • Tools for managing their feelings, make better mental judgement and solve problems.

I work with people to develop the needed skills to prevent problems and function better.


2.  Do I need a referral to see a you?

A referral is not necessary when making an appointment to see me. You can simply call to schedule an appointment on the front page.


3.  How much do you charge for each therapy session?

I charge $150.00/hour.


4. Will my insurance plan cover this?

Each insurance plan works differently. If you have an insurance plan through work that covers psychological services then you should review the details of this coverage. Typically if you have an amount of coverage per year then you would pay me directly, receive a receipt from me, and submit that for reimbursement.


5.   What should I expect in a typical counselling session?

Before you begin counseling, I will ask you to fill out certain forms to assess your personal situation. In the first session, the priority is to find out any applicable history, current concerns and establish goals that you want to accomplish

There is really no "typical" therapy session as there are different methods of treatment for different problems. However, I will be focused each session at bringing in tools and strategies that have been shown to be effective at accomplishing your goals. I do my best to cultivate a safe, relaxed and confidential environment when working with my clients. I advocate evidence based principles within our session and treat clients with compassion and respect in order to yield effective and positive change.During the final 10 minutes of the session we will discuss some new strategies to practice between sessions.


6.  How many consultation sessions do I need?

This will vary with each client based on their unique problem area(s) and personal circumstances.

I will generally have an idea after the first session as to how long it might take for you to reach the goals set. Some clients remain in counselling for just a brief time, around 4 sessions or a little more. Other patients who have had long-standing problems may choose to stay in counselling for a number of months. Initially, I see clients once a week, unless they are in crisis. Therapy frequency will change to every other week as you progress, then once every three weeks. This gradual tapering of sessions allows clients to practice the skills learned while still in therapy. Booster sessions are recommended three, six and twelve months after therapy has ended.


7. How do I know if the counseling is working?

Many clients notice a decrease in their symptoms within three to four weeks of therapy if they have been diligently attending sessions and applying the strategies discussed in counseling between sessions on a daily basis.

Counseling is a collaborative process, and is most effective when clients prepare for the upcoming sessions by evaluating and applying techniques learned along the way to everyday life.

8. What about privacy and confidentiality?

I understand that clients are often concerned about their privacy and confidentiality. Any information disclosed to me (including case notes, records, and psychological test results) is confidential and cannot be disclosed without the client’s consent. If there is any need to disclose information from files with another professional (for example a midwife, medical doctor, lawyer, third party billing source), the client is consulted first and asked to sign a release of information document. There are some legal limitations to confidentiality, however, which I will discuss with you during your first session.
